While most travelers plan their vacations around fixed dates, we’ve learned to embrace flexibility and spontaneity through standby life. Our friends are always gracious and welcoming when we call them up saying “hey, I’m in town, are you free for lunch?” And, yes, usually our two young boys are in tow!
My mother in law worked for United for 42 years, and this has allowed us some incredible experiences! It sometimes feels like we’ve done everything and other times, like we haven’t scratched the surface. Once my husband and I were on flight benefits, it re-shaped I experience the world. Then, add in two kids and you might just think we’re crazy!

Why I Write
After years of friends asking how we manage to experience such amazing destinations while flying standby – and with kids! – I realized our perspective might be helpful to others.
